What is “Authentic” Montessori?

Unfortunately, anyone can call their school a “Montessori” school. There is no trademark or required oversight in using that name. When it comes to researching Montessori schools, the responsibility lies with the parents to do their research in determining if their child will get a true Montessori experience. There is no regulations around ensuring  whether the program has the appropriate Montessori materials or that the teachers are properly trained in the Montessori Method.

How can a parent tell if their child’s school is an authentic Montessori school?

ams_logoMonarch is an Initiate Member of the American Montessori Society (AMS). This assures our families and staff that certain standards and qualifications are maintained at our school.  In order for our school to be a part of AMS, our teachers must hold recognized Montessori credentials and we must follow guidelines based on Montessori philosophy and procedures, as well as agree to abide by the AMS Code of Ethics.

All of our head teachers are Montessori Credentialed, and we are a Member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the North American Montessori Teachers’ Association (NAMTA).

One way to determine if a school is abiding by the true principles and practices of Maria Montessori is finding out whether or not they are accredited through a recognized association. The two most prominent are: Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) and the American Montessori Society (AMS).

The right choice…

“The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences.” – Dr.Maria Montessori

“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.” – Dr.Maria Montessori

“Respect all the reasonable forms of activity in which the child engages and try to understand them.” – Dr.Maria Montessori

What Client’s Say

“My child has learned numerous things and of important to me is ability to understand respect. Respect
for others. Respect for materials and respect for oneself. So thank you all!!!”
Anna Smith
“Basically, my daughter prefers to be in school than anywhere else. She is in a rush to get there in the morning, and is in no rush to leave when I come to pick her up. We have complete peace of mind. If only, there was school on weekends.”
Joanne Ferraro
“It is very important to us that our daughter enjoys going to school and this is made evident by the fact
that she no longer cries in the morning as she used to in her previous daycare.”
Elizabeth McGregor
“Our daughter is progressing amazingly for her age, and we contribute that to both home life and her
school life. So far, we feel that the Monarch team has helped to nurture our daughter and maximize every experience she has to help her progress through the ever changing world… thank you all!”
